VT2012 NETWORK CULTURES

VIDEO Group Project :Online video 3mins made by Mary, Rio, Keira and Natalia

Reflective Commentary

Do we parents control our children? Or do computer games control our children?

In the lecture of network culture we had to create groups of three to four, to create a video relating to the one of the topics we have discuss in network culture. We had to brainstorm ideas of what we would like to discuss in our video. My group consists of four people Me, Rio, Keira and Natalia each member had to have a role.

Our group finally decided to make a video, about a girl who is addicted to her video game. We started to shoot each scene of the video, each scene of her, in bed dreaming about the game. Waking up to a theme tune of the video game stuck in her head, the first task she does is play the video game.  Although the girl’s mother tries to talk to her and offer her some breakfast, the young girl pushes her away telling her to leave her alone.  In scene two the girl is at school in class, whilst in class teacher is teaching and all the other pupils and they have their heads down and seem be listening and learning, apart from her. Not paying attention in class with her schoolbooks are filled with drawings of the video game character, she can’t get out of her head. Scene three is the girl gets home the first thing she decides to do is play the game.

Scene four the mother comes into the girl’s room, she has finally lost her temper with her daughter because she’s not answering her. Trying to get her daughter’s attention by waving her hands to her, when she is ignored she decides to unplugged the video game. Towards the end of scene four the mother is puzzled. The mother turns around and looks at her daughter and feels scared and tries to walk out of her daughter’s room. The girl stands up infuriated with anger; she gets up and throws the television set at her mother. The mother then falls to the ground and the girl runs over, with a big grin on her face she puts her foot on her mothers unconscious still body.

For the group video we had to do research, looking into stories of children that have a video game addictions. The story that really caught my group’s attention was of Daniel Petric, age sixteen living in Ohio his parents. His parents didn’t agree with him playing violent computer games, for at this time it was affecting his schoolwork. So Daniel decided he would go to his friend’s house, to play ‘The Shooting’ on his X box 360 and ‘Halo 3’. He was very addictive to the game for going to these great lengths just to play them, after being banned in the first place by his parents. Days later day he purchased a video game without his parent’s consent, later that day his parents found out about the game. Taking immediate action they took it off him and put it in their safe, a month later he was still yearning for the game. Daniel retrieved the game from the safe he later then told his parents to have a seat. Seconds later he attempted to kill his parents for taking his video game.

I have a surprise for you”. He then shot them both killing his mother and seriously injuring his father. ‘Daniel got 23 years in prison ‘The judge still does … suggest that the video game warped Petric's mind, despite little proof that was true. However, the judge notes that even if he was under the influence of the video game, that's no defence for what he did.’        (Masnick, 2009).

“But video game addiction can ruin lives. Children who play four to five hours per day have little time for socializing, doing homework, or playing sports. Kicking the habit is hard, too”
(Unknown, 2010).

Children of this new generation need to be bought up on books, playing outdoors being more active socialising. It’s troubling to hear a young man would go to such lengths as to kill his own parents such unimportant things like a video game. It just makes you think what this world is coming into.

"It's not that the games are bad," said Gentile. "It's not that the games are addictive. It's that some kids use them in a way that is out of balance and harms various other areas of their lives." (Vivo, 2010).

In conclusion I feel working as a group we could have made more of an effort to meet up regularly. We should of have given ourselves a lot more time to frame out a plan for our video. Overall I think the video worked really well and we achieve our small targets, which we set other for the deadline. Simply our video is all about parents neglecting their children and letting video games raise them to the point it takes over their life.

Working with these individuals I discovered it was difficult, for the organisation of discussing what to do for our video was hard. For some people where constantly making accuses as why they couldn’t make it wasting time. Though nearer to the deadline the reality of it sunk in and our group pull together at the last few days, to create what I believe to be a very successful outcome. Judging on feedback we manage to balance the right amount seriousness and using tongue and cheek humour, yet still get our message and the issue at hand across to our audience.

So do we control our children, or do video games control our children? I do feel that video games sometimes can control children, for this generation if we let it continue the consequences could be dyer. Parents should stand there ground and take control, so that the gaming world does not reunion the child’s mind.

NETWORK CULTURE BLOGS BY MARY OKEREKE

THE RISE OF NETWORK CULTURE

What is Network Culture?

For me in today’s society my definition of Network Culture is ways of communicating the consists of a relationship between media, culture and technology. The genealogy of the media blogs and social software’s like Facebok, Twitter, Blogging, hotmail, Skype and many more.

(fig.1)

Looking at ( fig .1) it shows how these networks are structured, we are living in a society where a Distributed Network is travelling from one network to another.
The information seems easier and faster to find for example Internet research, the response is given to the user instantly as researched.
A Centralized network is where all the users connect to a central server, which store the users information straight away. Where as a Decentralized Network is built within in a peer-to-peer using VPN’s and the software BGP routers uses a memory to store up messages.

TECHNOLOGY SHAPING OR CULTURE

“The networked relations between them, links between people, between machines, and between machines and people.”
Varnelis ,K.(Unknown)

In this 21st century we live in times where people don’t really write letters anymore, it’s now done by the use of  emailing, text and other online chats to keep in contact.  Our technology has enhanced rapidly over the years,
I think Technology has done good things for our society. It has it’s advantages and disadvantages as humans we have defiantly shaped technology. It has help us to mend relationships and destroy them, and  also it has help to keep in touch with more people at one time . The fear that we are losing quality over quantity results in less time with our peers. We’re becoming great at communicating via computer but losing the ability to converse in person, where as communication in person is very important   it helps build relationships with stronger communication.

DIGITAL NATIVES AND DIGITAL IMMIGRANTS

“The former are surrounded by digital media to such an extent that their very brain structures may be different from those of previous generations.”
(VanSlyke, 2003).

Digital Native is someone who like me would adapt to the technology very easily, knowing the in and outs of the product.

Digital Immigrant is someone who is not used to technology. For example
up to now you would think the older generation would know how to use the newest technology, funny enough my auntie sometimes cannot use her mobile to text me. On the mobile device it’s so advanced that in technology which is current very new to her.

Digital Identity

My own definition of digital identity of a person could be business wise or it could be for a personal it identifies in connections or transactions from PCs/ laptop, mobile phones or other personal devices like.

“There is no gender identity behind the expressions of gender; ... identity is performatively constituted by the very "expressions" that are said to be its results”
Judith Butler (Gender Trouble, p. 25)
The real identity and a digital identity is someone to know his or hers identity who is the person, from what nationality is the person, gender, and where they live, or in other words to prove who you say you are.
Digital identity involves some type of prove to use digital connections like the web using the Internet.

What is Identity?

Identity is built with character, a brand, culture and self-image.  I would say sometimes identity could be very misleading; it actually depends on the person’s information and images. They feel the need to share on the Internet for example sites. For example Facebook, chat sites, dating sites and many more. Facebook users have some information about themselves and what they do.

As an artist myself I have photo albums, this is of personal photos of what I do in my daily life. Looking at other peoples profile on my page I sometimes have a different opinion, about that person until when you see that person. Yet in real life they are completely the opposite, I think it’s kind of normal for users to give an idea of the person they are. Though the information given i.e. photos of a person, you can sense the kind of person they portray themselves to be. Self-identity makes us stand out from everybody that makes us all unique in our own way; it can even be classed as a product brand also.

“Modern Western societies do not leave individuals in any doubt that they need to make choices of identity and lifestyle”

HAS FACE BOOK CHANGED US

FACEBOOK WHY DO WE US FACEBOOK

              To update status to find friends and keep in contact, birthdays and events etc;
It troubling to know how people put the information about them self on facebook. It feels like people don’t have any boundaries, for example pictures on nights out with the ladies/lads nights out with drunken photos, of themselves portraying their amazing nights out. Not only there can be decent photos of them, with family and friends birthday celebrations but that not all. It’s the constant updating their statuses every minute sharing their personal thoughts on how they are feeling and what is happening to them at that present time.

“The social networking sites will only make these feelings worse. We will have less social skills and will connect with each other less and less.” (Bloomfield, 2000).

The advantage of Facebook is that we are constantly being updated on what is happening in the world, via world news, family aboard and many more. The disadvantage of having you life monitored of your daily activities, I feel that it is unsettling part about it. To use this network is your own choice, if the user uses it or not so I do feel Facebook has changed us all individually.

Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook at nineteen years old, he launched the site as a Harvard sophomore on February 4th 2004. This first was first called ‘thefacebook.com’, which became a big hit worldwide.
He never knew his idea would become world wide being one of the most popular social network sites of all time to have an average of 400 million profiles a month

“One of the biggest web sites in the world, visited by 400 million people a month.”
(Carlson, 2001).

  Mediated Memory Personal Lifetime Storage

This research experiment carried out by Gordon Bell ‘Lifelog’ was researched for Microsoft Software network…

“Being there, while being here, at possibly some later time”
(Bell, Unknown).

Gordon bell made an experiment involve him capturing a lifetime’s. This was of his own life it consisted of articles, books, cards, letters, papers, photos, pictures, presentations, home movies, and voice recordings and storing them digitally.

“The cheapest, fastest, and most reliable components of a computer system are those that aren't there.”
(Bell, 2011).

As the law stands the police can now take what they wish from digital files, if they have cause to do so. Obviously they didn’t have the ability to do this with regular human memories. They would need to know the user or people who set up ‘off shore’ accounts. This was for the files to be secure which also allows the system to let people to delete, the content they don’t wish to be reminded about.

Researching about Bell I found that the article he talks about how cyber storage, this actually kept the windows file system safe. The reason for this was because it depends on the format of the document. It costs more money to update it and enhance the software. Bell experiment is impressive it could be a big database on a personal computer. This would be based on thousands of personal memories stored, though at the same time it intimidating having you life monitored.
